Bayer Australia - Supporting people with MS

Supporting people with MS

Bayer Schering Pharma has for many years been a strong supporter of people with MS (multiple sclerosis).

A key aspect of Bayer Schering Pharma support is the part-funding of an MS Nurse Specialist role within Auckland City Hospital’s neurological unit.

Justine Simmonds has been in this role since its inception in 2000 and says that over the years it has grown considerably.

“The role was originally established as an Interferon nurse, but has expanded into education and support for people newly diagnosed with MS,” she explains.

“Today it’s a totally holistic approach focused on education and what an individual with MS personally needs. This can be done one-to-one or in groups, such as the strategy days we hold for people newly diagnosed with MS.”

Justine also provides a triage service via the phone for people with MS in what she describes as “an open door policy” that extends to GPs and MS Society organisations.

“It really is a unique role where I have to deal with all situations as they occur, be a clinical expert, advocate, educator, counsellor and researcher, not only for people with MS, but their families, health professionals and community services,” she adds.

In addition to part-funding Justine’s role, Bayer Schering Pharma funds strategy days and conferences and assists with getting MS organisations together where ideas and information can be shared.
