Saving New Zealand’s wildlife

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre

As a global company Bayer has been committed to environmental protection and social responsibility for more than a century.

A key focus of ours is sustainability and helping ensure icons such as the kiwi are still around for future generations.

That’s why Bayer New Zealand is a major sponsor of the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre, located in Whangarei, north of Auckland.

Founders Robert and Robyn Webb, who have 30 years experience working with injured birds, manage and run the Centre with the help of a small committee of volunteers.

Every year, the Centre cares for thousands of injured birds, including albatross, kiwi, hawks, owls, penguins and many other breeds. Where possible, the birds are nursed back to health and released into the wild.

A major part of Bayer’s sponsorship is the Bayer Kiwi Incubation Unit, which hatches kiwi eggs. Once the eggs are hatched, chicks are grown to a size where they can better defend themselves against predators and then released back into the wild.

Bayer also sponsors the kiwi recovery pens, where kiwi are placed in a secure environment to assist with their recovery from injury.

The public is able to check on the progress of injured birds through the Bayer webcams installed at the Centre.
