New Research Uncovers Hidden Struggles of Australian Mothers

Bayer's prenatal multivitamin brand, Elevit, has released a new survey1 highlighting the unspoken challenges faced by Australian women during pregnancy. The study, involving over 1,000 women aged 18-45, reveals significant emotional, physical, and societal pressures, often exacerbated by external expectations and social media.

Baby

Key Findings

  • 80% of women who have given birth agree the pressure of perfection placed on them by society makes it harder to be open about the stress of pregnancy: from the conception delays experienced by 57% of women causing sadness (47%) and envy (34%), to feeling sensory overload from being ‘touched out’ (49%) and isolated or loneliness (27%) postpartum, women’s struggles can go unheard.
  • Aussie mums (and those soon to be) face pressure throughout their journey, from pre-conception to post-partum: more than two thirds (69%) of these women have felt very responsible for ‘getting everything right’ while pregnant, for their baby’s health – a pressure fuelled by society, social media, friends and family, and their own expectations.
  • Elevit hopes shining light on these burdens will encourage mums to seek support: by backing Aussie startups Lumi Health and Happy Kat, Elevit is further strengthening its support across pre-conception, pregnancy and early motherhood by delivering a healthier, more rounded experience.

Holistic Geneticist and Nutritionist, Dr. Denise Furness has witnessed first-hand the immense physical and emotional demands of even the conception phase: “Pregnancy demands extensive physical and emotional change. When you couple that with the external pressures of social media, or constant comparison to family and friends, it can drastically impact a woman's experience of this critical life journey”, she said.

Positive Outcomes

Despite the challenges, the survey indicates that many women discover inner strength through the motherhood journey. Over 25% noted that their support network exceeded expectations, encouraging a community-driven approach to motherhood.
